Earth stars!

I discovered a large patch of earth star fungi in Colinton Dell today - this is a new patch that I haven't seen before and there are lots of fungi - the photo shows only three of them, but there were probably ten or so earth stars all together. They're a bit past their best but you can still see the dark brown star shapes round the white puffball type centre.

A great find! I believe they are decent eating when fresh, although I would never try in a billion years.

Never heard of them. I will look to see if we have earth stars here in the US.

Hi Simon, no I wouldn't eat them either! There are a surprising number of earth stars in the green areas of Edinburgh

Hi Sandy, you may have some over there too, there are a lot of different species of them

Pretty. Everything frozen and white here - a sort of unusual January so far!!!
