Thanks everyone! Weaver, the mill lade is the mill stream going into the mill, while the mill race is the mill stream coming back out from the mill. (There's a chance I've got the words the wrong way round....)
Pictures remind me - when you walk the river there as part of the patrol, is there a regular foot path with easy visibility of the river? Or what is it like?
Most of our local rivers and streams have forested banks with not a lot of stream side walking paths. When we go along a stream or river to survey for spawning salmon we usually have to bushwhack or wade in the stream.
I am loving the autumn display at the moment. I have been cycling along footpaths strewn in yellow autumn leaves (I should really find out what tree they are from).
Rabbits' Guy - that's a goof question and I should do a blog post about it! There's an excellent footpath along the river (though at the moment parts of it are shut off due to flood prevention works) but there hasn't always been one....
Beautiful photography ... the leaves remind me of those dolls/puppets people used to make when I was a child with one circle/hexagon of material on top of another on top of another ...

I've always liked to make little mental stories about the miniature worlds in places like puddles or streams...lovely pictures.
