Rabbit Awareness Week

Anya, our rescue bunny who lived with us until she crossed the Rainbow Bridge in June 2007

It's Rabbit Awareness Week here in the UK - a chance to raise the profile of these wonderful pets.

The RSPCA is supporting the campaign in England and Wales for the whole month of May with over 100 RSPCA branches and animal centres running events to help raise awareness of rabbits ' welfare needs. You can take your rabbit for a free health check at a vet or attend educational events about rabbit welfare. You can find out what's happening near you by visiting this page.

Rabbits are the third most popular domestic pet and make wonderful companions but they are often misunderstood so this is a great campaign to try to raise their profile a little and improve the conditions for rabbits that are kept as pets.

What a beautiful animal. I can imagine she was a wonderful pet. I've fond memories of an aunt's next-door neighbour's house rabbit - "Thumper," from many years ago. Adoption isn't an option with us, unfortunately. GP cat and dog would certainly take an interest, just not the kind that Peter Rabbit would enjoy!

I agree with your third place for rabbits. Dogs are certainly first place as far communication is concerned, cats are second and I think with a considerable distance from dogs...sometimes they are total enigmas. I had five cats, one was a mystery for more than one reason, for example once in the house he only went as far as the balcony and then every time ran hurriedly back in, full stop... And rabbits...I feel very ignorant about their behaviour and reactions. I had guinea-pigs though, seven of them in the 80's, they were not easy to understand. Great friends though in a very subtle way, with their rustling and their trimming teeth... and steady gaze...very close to the marvellous rabbit in your photo.

What a gorgeous looking animal!

My cousin had a rabbit called 'Bunty' when I was a girl, who I rather liked. It's probably not the best time for me to get a rabbit, unless it was a really fierce one. Although Titus is getting on a bit, and doesn't make a move any more when a wild one breaks cover in the field.

All the best for Rabbit Awareness Week.

Here on the farm we have wild rabbit awareness twenty four hours a day Juliet! But I do agree that some tame pet rabbits have a pretty raw deal - children need educating to keep a pet and many rabbits live in very poor conditions and with a very inadequate diet.

Thanks Juliet for sharing Anya, she was Gorgeous!Bunnies Are the most amazing pet to have and boy do they comunicate!Speedy is my third one but they all have had the most amazing characters they are cheeky rascals who love attention, cuddle, and play time, they love play with us humans, and when they want to be they can be very stroppy too! Most people who have bunnies never see the character of the buns because the are stuffed in a hutch outside all on there own which is why I will always have a house bunny!
