Monday was a bank holiday so for my regular walk along the Water of Leith in the Dells, I left the litter picker at home and Crafty Green Boyfriend came along and took most of the photos below. The weather was lovely and there were plenty of birds around including this very round Robin
There were also plenty of insects to see. We saw a surprising number of Hairy Shieldbugs (below) in a small area and in the same relatively small area we saw a good number of different hoverflies, including this Long Hoverfly (Sphaerophoria scripta)
this Chequered Hoverfly (Melanostoma sp)
this Banded Hoverfly (Syrphus sp) (with 7-Spot Ladybird)
and this Common Dainty (Baccha elongata) which we don't see particularly often, though it is apparently quite common
Other insects included several butterflies, including Comma and Small Tortoiseshell Also a Scorpion Fly
and a Dark-edged Bee Fly
A lovely way to spend a bank holiday!

Beautiful collection of photos. Take care, have a great day!
What a wonderful way to spend a bank holiday. Sometimes leaving the litter picker at home and simply enjoying the walk, the wildlife, and the sunshine is exactly the right thing to do. I’m impressed by the variety of insects you spotted in such a small area. The Common Dainty hoverfly especially has such an unusual shape compared to the hoverflies most people notice. And that robin really does look delightfully round. The Water of Leith always seems to reward careful walkers with little moments of nature if they slow down enough to look. Your photos captured that beautifully. The butterflies and bee fly especially give the whole post a very “late spring finally arriving” feeling.
Your photos are beautiful and captivating. Thank you so much for sharing, and warm greetings from Montreal, Canada.
You got some great photographs here, I especially like the robin.
All the best Jan
