Crafty Green Poet: Red breasted merganser family

I saw this family of red breasted merganers at Musselburgh today. It was so sweet to watch them preening.

then they gathered closer together for more preening

There is a little family of mergansers on our slough now, but they are not the red-breasted and are quite shy; 4:41 am
