Hornbeam trees are at their most beautiful at the moment. They're not native to Scotland (though they are native to the southern parts of England) but have been planted here in various places. In Edinburgh, there are good numbers of Hornbeams alongside the Water of Leith, where they were planted because their wood was very hard and strong, ideal for making parts for the many mills that used to line the river.
They are lovely trees at any time of year, but at the moment, their fruits have turned yellow and look wonderful against the blue sky. These fruits are known as samaras.
