Winter in the Dells

The snails are hibernating

and so are the orange ladybirds


but the jackdaws are already pairing up

I find the odd solitary hibernating ladybird but I've never been lucky enough to come across a little sleepy colony like that

Just last summer I learned a new word: "estivation." It's a similar process to hibernation, except it occurs in hot, dry conditions, when creatures slow everything down to survive the heat.

I think the cold weather we've been having makes everyone wish they could hibernate!!!
