Late Spring Snapshot

A confusion of cherry trees
has bloomed since November
while others are still in bud -
leaves slow to unfurl in the cold
late Spring. The nuthatch, a southern
bird welcomed here by recent warmth
fluffs its feathers, delays nesting.

It is a late spring isn't it - some migratory birds have been caught in severe weather storms here.
We have the red-breasted nuthatch year round.
Love that line 'A confusion of cherry trees'!

we have nuthatches all year long... but this says a lot about the nature and the confusion of seasons we've been experiencing lately...

Scot, thanks
Janice - thanks and yes very late spring
polona - England has nuthatches all year round, they're sometimes seen in southern Scotland but i know very little about their distribution, though we did see a couple at the weekend.

And when it's late again next year, perhaps more people will take notice??

Ah, how we ignore the signs in nature. It knows best.

Love the confusion of cherry trees - and the birds - their voices sound like questions!

Visiting here is like taking a walk through the woodland. I love it.

I know others have said it already but "confusion of cherry trees" is such an awesome line! Love the outdoorsy feel to this poem.

Love how you capture the birds. They simply deal with the confusion.

Lovely write!

A lovely poem to read on a cool spring morning in Georgia. I listened to the nuthatch call- a silver cord arced like an arrow toward me.
