expecting food -
a squirrel runs to me
and hugs my leg.
I write a lot of poetry about animals, especially birds. Here are some examples from the archives:
In the Dark (for Anya our rabbit)
I have also posted several poems featuring birds over on Bolts of Silk, the most recent being:
Yang Chung's Poem 70 by Duane Locke
Animals for Totally Optional Prompts

How absolutely delightful Juliet! You write so well the connection between all things. I love this.
I can't stop smiling when I imagine that funny squirrel :) Nicely written.
I like your haiku, but I prefer our local squirrels at a somewhat safer distance. :)
Nice bird poems too!
Mad Kane
Janice, Ricardas, Madeleine - thanks!
Awwww, I miss wee squirrels. Lovely piece!
You've got bold squirrels in your neighborhood. Mine are scaredycats even though I feed them.
Yeah! They usually run away from me...
Of course, this was that post....I already read, lovely.
i love animals and have a seemingly wonderful relationship with them,, till i go to feed my barn cat,, and he continuously wants to bite me...
go figure....
The haiku is crisp and nice... I especially like the piece on Swifts.
your little haiku scurries along, just like the squirrel
I'm glad the squirrel feelings are mutual - one would hate to think of you being mugged by a little critter!
I love the swifts poem! it tugs at my heart.
You write fine natural-flow nature connections that are truly a pleasure to read!
In the Dark (sweet) and Swift (sublime) my favorites. Thank you Juliet. As always.
Oh, that made me giggle. Really great job. I love using squirrels in poems. They make such good characters.
Here's an old "squirrely" poem I wrote:

I love the image of the expectant squirrel. Almost cartoonish! Super.
An amazing image from so few words!
Squirrels are always running in and out of my balcony. I love watching them. Sometimes I fed them out of hand too.

I so enjoyed the anthology you set here for us.
It was hard to choose a favorite of yours, so I just won't try (I did love your rabbit dancing with joy when no one was watching).
