haiku - bugs in Malawi

hippos grunt
in the dusk shrouded river -
fireflies flicker.

********************************
sausage flies
squeeze under the door -
one bare light bulb.

********************************
praying mantis
on the back of a chair -
gecko watches.

********************************
hunting spiders
scuttle across the floor -
red flip flops.

Great haiku, but a little two many bugs for me!
Were they able to get indoors???

thanks polona.

Sandy - yes they got indoors - we had very domesticated bugs in Malawi!

I like all your haiku. Spiders, ewwww, creepy crawlers!

As I read this I am reminded of all the bugs (and other creatures) I have been watching on Planet Earth-
Living in FL, we have a lot of our wildlife inside the house as well- not by choice, mind you.

I see the little geckos walking the walls and hear the palm trees rustle as I read this one!

I really enjoy the hippos sharing the river with the fireflies...

Also the praying mantis and the gecko - the hunter hunted...

Exotic creepy crawlies !
Love the gecko.

Such delightful images! I love grunting hippos, and the visual I got of sausage flies squeezing under a door cracks me up. The gecko watching a praying mantis is cool. And hunting spiders creates such a powerful feeling. Well done!

Taken together, these are so very atmospheric. A real sense of place. Thanks!

you took me to a place I've never been & I loved it...especially the hippos bathing by firefly light. What a world!

Nice images. The one about the mantis reminded me of summers where I grew up ... we always, somewhere along the line, saw a praying mantis somewhere around the house.

Lots going on here. I could relate to the last one, but I've never heard of sausage flies, and I dont think I would like them :)

Your order choice was wonderful. You set the stage so very well with the hippos and fireflies. The second one caused an eek reaction in me just because the flies sound so huge. Wonderful haiku, all of them.

Wonderfully described moments. The tension and motion is the focus. Very vibrant.

southern me - thanks! Sorry you don't like spiders!

Regina - its one of the negatives of living in a hot climate I guess!

jlb, plain foolish - thanks!

spacedlaw - I loved having the geckos in our living room! Very sweet!

Clare - thanks! Yes hunting spiders create a 'powerful feeling' - especially in November when they're full size....

get zapped, roswila, megan, rae - thanks!

Chris - it does depend on the bugs, but yes the indoor bugs I describe here are not things you really want in your house!

Bill, Jason - thanks!

Jem, Patois - sausage flies, not even sure if that is their real name, are quite large but the worst thing is the creepy way they squeeze under doors. Total yuck - though harmless.
