Liftshare

Liftsharing can help you to reduce your carbon footprint and get to know your neighbours or work colleagues better! Find someone travelling your way so you can share your journey, save money, cut your carbon footprint and have fun!

In the UK it is National Liftshare Week 4-8 October. You can find out more here.

I don't liftshare on a regular basis, I either walk or take the bus. Sometimes I take lifts with people after poetry events. I would liftshare more regularly if it was appropriate and I could find someone going the same route as I was doing.

Do you liftshare? What have your experiences been?

If you're in the Uk and interested in liftsharing, then you can register your interest on the Liftshare website here and they can find a match for you.

I work from home, so it's not really an issue for me. I am tickled though, that my new allotment garden is just three miles away. Definitely a walkable distance on a bright autumn day.

I did a liftshare for about 3 years when one of my coworkers lived very close. It worked out really well because we were both able to get our work done about the same time everyday. It saved both of us quite a bit in fuel and vehicle wear. A couple of years ago he moved and there are not others close by. One option that my job allows is that I can telecommute 3 days a week so I only have to drive in for 2 days a week and that has really saved a lot. My latest effort to be more green is I bought a new hybrid (pics on my blog) yesterday that gives me twice as much economy and has some really nice new safety features.

it makes so much sense to do this. there aren't many opportunities for this on Long Island though they do have special lanes on our Long Island expressway for cars that have more than one person per vehicle.

I just started it. Beyond the savings, it's nice to have someone to talk to--lots better than just listening to music.

Van pools from our area to the Seattle metro area are very popular. Locally all events try to encourage ride-sharing/car-pooling.

Freeways near cities have "HOV" lanes (High Occupancy Vehicles) which is 2 or more people and motorcycles! (And busses.)

I don't as a regular event, but if someone is going my way at the right time and it isn't out of the way, certainly. I do have coworkers that think it's funny that I won't accept a ride if they have to make a special trip.

I try and walk to work three days a week, but sometimes don't get up in time or have errands to do on those days so I drive.
On the other two days I have a longer commute, I drive and try to do all my errands on the way to/from work but don't liftshare - I doubt if I could find anyone going the same route.
I used to occasionally give my son a lift when he was living at home, two people in the car may have looked more environmentally friendly but actually wasn't, as I used more fuel by going slightly out of my way to drop him off, and his alternative would have been the bus.
It's certainly a good idea in larger more crowded cities where more people may be going the same way.

Pamela - there are definite advantages to working from home! Enjoy your new allotment!

Kelly - it works best if its really convenient, you're right!

Lily - it does make sense, yes!

Shakespeare - the company is one of the advantages, yes

Rabbits Guy - good that its popular in your area!

Catherine, yes it is popular in cities and you're right that the bus can often be better, but some people don't like buses and would prefer a liftsahre if they can find it
