Not entirely sure whether the swallows were actually on their way to their wintering grounds, but they were flying in a southerly direction and seemed determined.....

  1. hello juliet, thanks for this gentle visual poem to the arrival of early autumn. it's my favourite time of year. i'm always sad to see the birds flying by in their big v's or in those improbably masses of flying forms that somehow don't bang or bump into each other and travel such great distances. have a peaceful day. steven

  2. A beautiful picture. Rosebay Willow herb looks so lovely in its natural habitat. Shame it is so aggressive in a garden.

  3. Even if they weren't migrating, I bet they were thinking about it. It doesn't seem two minutes since they arrived.

  5. What a lovely evocative poem. I love autumn, I find it both wistful and exhilarating. Here we have house martens, and no doubt they will soon take off on their journey. I will miss their burbling squabbling in the eaves!

  6. Can hardly believe summer is virtually over. Here in the States it is Labor Day Weekend, the "official" end of summer. We too have birds leaving. I'm pretty sure the hummingbirds are gone after eating voraciously for the last while. the Martens are gone of course, and the geese are practicing their Vee formations. The ducks seem to be gathering into flocks as well. although I do love fall, it is coming too early this year. We just started summer weather a week ago! Truly! some years are just like that though! thanks for sharing the beautiful photo and poem!

  8. Gorgeous. I don't know if they are ready yet. Sadly, I realize I haven't seen many swallows this Summer.
