Suburban Garden

Shadows slant over a cobbled courtyard,
bees buzz in scented air,

an orange kitten lounges.

Sunlit statues in the corner
and herbs in terracotta

against an ochre wall.

Behind a wrought iron gate
in a high wall
by an ordinary
town path.

not haiku, but still in the moment for Read Write Poem

  1. Nature is always the extraordinary, and it's even more so when we find it in the midst of the ordinary! I love this!

  9. Nature finds every possible place to thrive in its diversity. Pity we're ignoring this truth of life, and following sameness instead.

Wonderful -- a lovely painting with the orange kitten offering a colorful contrast in the scene.

This is almost all really lovely and evocative of a special moment

Though for some strange reason the orange kitten jarred on me - my mental image was a bit too dayglow! ;) Just my idiosyncracy, I suspect!

Thanks for sharing this lovely moment!

I want to stay in that first stanza. The whole poem comes across to me like a Bonnard painting (especially with that orange cat).

  22. Even though you said it wasn't in haiku form, but you surely did capture these moments well! :)

It's interesting to see how you carried and transform an image from one stanza to the next. For example, the "orange kitten" from stanza one becomes "sunlit statues". Do you see the parallel/pattern of colors? It's the same with the "ochre wall" (2nd stanza) and the "high wall" with the 3rd stanza.

I don't know if you realized that, but I certainly did! :) Thank you for sharing as I enjoyed this piece!

Also, thank you so much for visiting my poetry journal at Livejournal. :)

  23. Ambiguity Lotus - thanks for noticing the colours - i didn't consciously think of it like that but colour was uppermost in my mind when i saw this and when I wrote it...

Lirone - I guess it depends on the shade of orange you see!

Anthony - you're right, very true...
