Potatoes

Down in the small part of the backgreen that belongs to our stair of flats we've put out two pots of potatoes that seem to be doing really well. My partner's parents have grown potatoes like this for years and have said we can expect around 20 good sized potatoes from each pot.

  1. Gosh that's something I never thought of doing - potted potatoes - what a great idea! Is any particular kind better suited for potting?

  2. Boyfriend loves to grow things in pots, how big are the pots and what is the soil like? We have blueberries in pots, tomatoes, green beans, a couple of apple trees...

  3. Yes, how big are the pots?

The potatoes have done quite well here this year — after a heavy rain, the in-laws picked up four bushels of what washed out of the ground. Then they started digging. 8-o

I used four of them in our breakfast this morning, following a recipe of my uncle's.

  6. Do you remember Bob Flowerdew's stacks of tyres?!

Happy spud eating! They're quite an attractive plant too aren't they?

  7. Yes more about the details ... are they little finger potatoes? Gosh, our big reds would fill those pots with just about 3.

Looks like a fun idea, especially if you have limited space or want a good conversation piece too!

  10. Several questions there in the comments - I have to admit I don't know much, my partner's parents potted the potatoes for us, I don't know what type they are, I'll post pictures when we dig them up.....

  13. We have tried this method this year - the main advantage is that it deters slugs (a menace in the open garden) and the resulting spuds have been delicious - thin skinned, easily washed with hot water and scrumptious with butter and mint! Life is too short to carefully dislodge slugs from inside potatoes.(our variety was Kestrel)

  14. This is very intriguing. I had no idea potatoes were that easy to grow.

  15. I, too, am intrigued. I'll have to cut out some potato eyes one of these days. I recall that my dotter & SIL found potatoes going in their mulch heap up in N. Arizona, which resulted in a feast of little new potatoes.

I've grown them in pots too. They are delicious. You will notice a difference in the flavour.

Oh wow have not tried potatoes my sister has a bigger garden and does them but this is a fab idea may have to try that!! she plants them and then mounds up the dirt as the plants get bigger so you get more of a harvest then!! but I don't have the space so may try pots next year!! I did buy some last week from a local farm stand and they were heavenly!! what a difference from store bought!! yummy!! enjoy!! Hugs Linda
