Perfect! I've been listening to woodpeckers here for weeks and watching them damage older trees on our propety. I laughed out loud when I read your haiku. It captures the activity and intent of woodpeckers so well. Love this.
Love it. I've recently noticed a woodpecker living in a nearby tree on my evening walk route. His sound is more trill than laugh but I look forward to seeing him most evenings.
What a wonderful haiku, and an introduction to a bird I'd never heard of. We have several species of woodpecker, but not this one. They haven't begun their noise-making quite yet, but the time will come.
I had a red-headed one in the neighborhood last year, although I believe the downy is most common in our woods. They're a real delight - nature's percussionists!

I laughed a bit myself... and then followed your link. I'm learnign the birds through you, Juliet!
I've never seen a green woodpecker, but the image of living green inside gthe dead tree is wonderful.

What a good haiku, Juliet!
The sound coming out of a tree would be startling, especially in our dark woods.
Nice! I have never heard this particular woodpecker, but some who live here certainly do sound like they are laughing.
Fabulous! My in-laws just up the road are lucky enough to have woodpeckers, yet their sounds are always so unexpected, and so loud!
That and the picture pretty well nails it! (Is that Gorse there too?)
I love it!
Fantastic haiku to go with the wonderful shot. Your image was so strong that I can hear laughter coming from the tree.
Hi Juliet,
This haiku is fabulous and love the photo. We do not have woodpeckers here in NZ, so I enjoy reading of what birds are around your place.
Happy weekend
Hugs
Carolyn
Beautiful image, I have heard the woodpeckers laugh! Wonderful poem, Juliet!
Wonderful haiku idea. a dead tree laughing. :)
we have no such beauty here, with yellows. we have the Piliated Woodpecker so huge that comes sometimes, what a voice.
then there is the "laughing seagull". i hear it often. a fly-by cynical laugh.

Do green woodpeckers laugh? We have seen what are called laughing gulls -- and maniacal laughter would be the perfect way to describe them.
Sallie - well I'm not sure they're actually laughing, but it certainly sounds like it!
