I love the contrast (in each case) of the gold and the black.
Great haiku and great juxtaposition, Juliet. I imagine it must be very cold 'up north'!
Our 'black' here has been what I would have called a 'fleet' but am reliably informed is actually a 'flight' of Cormorants. Still waiting for the GOLD! But lots of white snow ...

Two excellent haiku and that extra contrast by putting the two together.
They do work very well together. You must have enough bird haiku to put together a book?
What an eye you have, J.
Jackdaws attacking a kestrel=crows attacking a sparrow hawk. Birds, like people, are pretty much the same everywhere.
Lovely images. :)
Nice pivot in the second one, and I love "mobbed" in the first.
Beautiful images, clear and sharp. You capture pictures and moments in those pictures in ways that show them to us, fresh and new. Thanks for this.
Lovely haiku! I can picture this clearly.
Nice to read some bird haikus again! I can see it! I can see it!
Bird behavior is so fascinating. You've really captured it, especially in the first one.
lovely snapshots of time caught in a ku.
'Tis a time for birds ...
Birds are easy to watch and then the words to match their activities, great partnership here. Two beautiful birds.
Makes me long for spring--or at least an invasion of goldfinches against the snow.
Wouldn't I like going for a birding walk with you!

pretty images, clearly cut.
I once did see a sparrow attacked by a bunch of larger birds-- I scared off, the sparrow recovered and flew away, and I wrote a song about it.

Very nice...I had to google Jackdaw, reminds me of our blackbirds.
Christina - I forgot to put the links in! Sorry, I've added them now!
black branches
criss-crossing the cloudy sky
goldfinches
This haiku reminded me of Bill's memorable one:
the difference
a sparrow makes –
bare branches
Whether it is a sparrow or a goldfinches, such lovely creatures make a difference.
Enjoyed reading your haiku and looking at the lovely photos.
