Dragonflies and Damselflies at Drumlanrig

One of the highlights of our recent trip to Dumfries and Galloway was Coldstream Loch in the grounds of Drumlanrig Castle

Literally hundreds of damselflies and a few dragonflies were flying around!

Large Red Dragonflies were mating with blue dragonflies busy in the background

Azure Dragonflies were mating

A few Four Spotted Chasers were chasing each other, defending their territories, though they did stop for long enough for Crafty Green Boyfriend to take their photos

There were also newts in the loch, you'll see two of them in the photo below if you look carefully

As well as the Loch, the estate has some lovely woodland walks

and open landscapes too

A lovely place to visit.

  2. Lovely! What a stunning sight that must’ve been!
I was sitting in our lounge, earlier, with the patio door open, and in flew a large dragonfly; it did one lap of the lounge and then made its exit as if to say, ‘ Well, there’s not much of interest here’. Lovely to see newts too! We only have a container pond at this new house, which doesn’t attract too much but it’s better than nothing.

  3. Hi Sal, it was indeed! It must have been a surprise to have a dragonfly doing a lap of your living room!

  4. Wow! How glorious, CGP, to see all the damsels and dragons. There have been so few in our corner of Suffolk so far.
