Tree Following November Update

For Tree Following this year, I've chosen a magnificent old cherry tree in North Merchiston Cemetery in Edinburgh. Crafty Green Boyfriend and I started walking round this cemetery every day for our #DailyExercise during the first UK lockdown last year. And we're still doing the same walk regularly, though not quite as often. I also sometimes pop into the cemetery after doing my weekly patrol along the Water of Leith

In the middle of October, the tree was definitely looking autumnal

Then by 25 October, although the colours were just as beautiful, the tree had already lost a lot leaves

and most of the colour had fallen into the grass

or into the ivy that grows around the tree,

You can see from the photo above and the close up below that the ivy is now flowering

It's a very valuable late season food source for pollinators such as bees and hoverflies, though I'm not seeing many of those around at the moment.

By the 1 November, the tree had lost almost all its leaves.

  1. The old Cherry Tree is a nice choice for your tree following.
The leaves are pretty, even on the ground.
Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.

  2. THere's a magnificent London Plane Tree in a small park near me, it is surely the biggest tree in town.

  3. It looks very different having dropped all it's leaves.
Good to see the ivy flowering, which is so important for wildlife at this time of year. xx

  4. A good choice for following. There's usually something of interest all year round.
I love the photo of the colourful cherry leaves contrasting with the glossy dark ivy, and the delicate pale ivy flowers.

  7. I agree—the colorful leaves on green grass and ivy are beautiful. But the tree looks so skeletal! Good to think about how it will be so full and green again.
