A Saturday in Saughton Park

Yesterday we had a lovely walk to and round Saughton Park, the first time we've actually been insde the park since lockdown began. The walled garden is looking beautiful

The roses are wonderfully in bloom just now

We also walked along the wonderful perimeter fence that is such a great place to find interesting insects! Yesterday's highlights included this red legged shieldbug

this cream spot ladybird (with a red mite)

this magnificent wasp
and this young hawthron shield bug, the young instars look quite different from the adult shield bugs

  1. Juliet, what a stunningly beautiful island of peace you've captured for your readers. And I'm able to view it sitting here, so far away from you. I feel like you've taken me on a mini-vacation. Thanks!

  2. What a lovely selection, CGP. And the ladybird is particularly handsome. What a beautiful formal garden, which must be great for insects.

  3. Great to get out into the park and walled garden again. “Regular” outdoor visits are not taken for granted any longer are they? The roses are perfect and every insect interesting (and as always I admire your knowledge).

  4. Thanks Gershon, I'm glad you enjoyed your virtual tour of the park!

Thanks Caroline! Normally the walled garden is literally buzzing with bees, but far fewer than normal on this visit.

Thanks Sallie, you're right, it feels like something special now to be able to visit parks (this walled garden was closed during lockdown though the rest of the park was open). We're lucky in having greenspaces close enough to us that we have been able to walk through even during the strictest parts of lockdown

  8. Haven't been to a park for a long time. Lockdown has made us realise how privileged we are, where we are, in so many ways - and one of those ways is the fact we have a biggish garden, which we tend to live in when the weather is half-decent.

  9. Sad but true, I had totally forgotten that it's time for the roses to bloom - wow what a year, lovely to see yours! I'll stick with my Thai orchids for now!!
