Things are buzzing in the Dells!

Colinton Dell was buzzing with bees today, even in the dull weather this morning. This wildflower meadow is just one of the places that was hosting significant numbers of bees

In among the bees there were also some other interesting insects. Some of the umbellifer plants were covered with these capsid bugs (Grypocoris stysi)

I also managed to get photos of three species of hoverflies, here's Myathropa florea

and here's a pellucid hoverfly (Volucella pellucens) with a bumble bee in the background

and here's a Epistrophe grossulariae

Thanks to the UK Hoverfly Group for helping me identify the hoverflies!

The buttercups are still looking lovely too

  7. Love the summer greens and am awed by your knowledge ... I feel smart when I can identify a bird correctly, and to know one hoverfly from another seems beyond belief. You inspire me to look more carefully and to follow up by reading about what I see.
