The laughter of a green woodpecker on a snowy hill

I joined Crafty Green Boyfriend for a walk round Corstorphine Hill at lunchtime today. It was quite snowy in places

and very wet underfoot where the snow and ice had melted.

Just about where I took the photo above, we heard a green woodpecker calling, it has a very distinctive laughing call.

There are lots of jelly ear fungi growing on fallen trees around the hill at the moment, they are aptly named as some of them look very like ears.

also this fungus, which I haven't identified

  1. A lovely post, Juliet. I have been watching 'our' Greater Spotted Woodie (female) on our feeder this afternoon. A sprinkling of snow here and very cold - but I have not been well so have been glad to stay indoors and watch wildlife from the window!

  4. The first time I heard a green woodpecker I thought I'd gone mad. Then I saw it at the bottom of a tree, and I knew what it must have been. It really is well known as the "yaffle".

  5. Oh those mushrooms, fungi are intriguing. Don't think I'd chance eating them though! Do you eat any wild mushrooms Juliet?

    Have a great weekend, G

  6. Hi Caroline, sorry you've not been well, hope you feel better soon

Eileen - it was, it's lovely to have somewhere like this to go for a walk at lunchtime

Simon - I remember once hearing a green woodpecker calling from a hollow tree, that was really weird sounding

Geraldine - I have sometimes picked wild mushrooms, but I don't really enjoy them apart from the giant puffball, which is delicious. The jelly ear in this post is edible, but I've never tried it
