Fungi and hibernating ladybirds

We were delighted to find some very good exampes of earth star fungi in the 'Hidden Meadow' in Colinton Dell today.

They're always impressive to see!

We were also very happy to see the orange ladybirds gathering together to hibernate in the fence posts as they often do. The odd thing is I've never seen this type of ladybird except when it's gathering like this.

We also saw a juvenile grey heron, thanks Crafty Green Boyfriend for this photo

and finally, we watched this cute grey squirrel in a yew tree in Colinton village, again it was Crafty Green Boyfriend who took the photo

  2. Hi Simon - it's dark largely because it's a juvenile, I think

  6. Those ladybugs, orange and red both, really love white RVs for some reason... A couple of times when we were traveling we found nests like that in corners outside and one year somehow some got inside and hatched What a mess that was. I always loved them before that, and maybe now it's been long enough that I can again!

    Impressive fungi!
