Autumn beauty in the Dells

Autumn is very definitely here now. It was a lovely day for my weekly voluntary work in the Dells along the Water of Leith. The autumn colours are beautiful, as in this photo of Spylaw Park seen from the Water of Leith Walkway

and here just upstream of the Blue Goose pub

(The Blue Goose is a thriving pub with the best beer garden in Edinburgh but is threatened with demolition to be replaced with yet another block of student flats. If you're in Edinburgh and don't want to lose this pub then please consider going to the planners' exhibition at Water of Leith Visitor Centre on Tuesday from 1-6.30 pm to lodge your concerns).

Some areas in the Dells are already carpeted with fallen leaves, these ash leaves are particularly photogenic

and this jelly antler fungus growing in a conifer stump is beautiful

  1. I hope they don't demolish that pub - that seems just wrong.

Love the title of the post - and everything is beautiful there, for sure.

  2. Beautiful place. You have different fungi from any I've ever seen. I guess that makes sense when I stop to think of it ... That's why truffles are so valuable.

  3. It's a lovely spot, but saddening that yet another pub in a nice spot is threatened with closure and demolition. Replacing everything with crappy flats is the way it goes at the moment. Or Tesco metros. Or Co-Ops.

  4. Keep the "Pub".

__Then, in every case, a Public House was just that... a public gathering that discussed the daily dilemmas, and acquired rational answers to solve those dilemmas. The only "Government" were the agreements among the locals.
__Of course I have no voice here, but in my historically conservative mindset, I'd fully argue for the preservation of the "Pub". History ignored, erased or forgotten can create the worst societal disease, that lack of concern for others.

__Although the modern has its value, that worth was born in history. Sorry to be so long winded Juliet, it is not my style. _m

  9. Beautiful Fall pictures, but oh dear, between the news in this post and your whole post above, it is enough to fill one with despair. Progress is not always a good thing. Mat least not the way the money people define it.
