Woodland Flowers

The wooded areas of Colinton and Criaglockart Dells along the Water of Leith are a wonderful display of flowers at the moment. There are bluebells (and yes white bluebells too!), wild garlic (see second photo), celandines, violets and buttercups. The birdsong is amazing too, blackcaps, song thrushes, wrens, robins, blackbirds, chaffinches and chiffchaffs to name just a few (the hyperlinks under the birds names link to the RSPB website where you can hear the birds sing as well as see them!).

But unfortunately I've not seen any swifts uet. They have normally arrived by now, though one year recently they didn't get here until 15 May. I've got my fingers crossed that they'll appear very soon!

Looks to be a neat place to walk and listen to birds. What does like garlic look like? i know wild onions, from where I used to live, but not garlic.

  2. I do love to see and hear the birds. We have a momma/daddy mockingbird pair that had babies in my firethorn tree. I call her the yard boss. When I water or go near her tree she dive bombs me. I run and laugh at the same time. She is a fiesty little girl.

  6. What an enchanting post, Juliet! Amy is becoming a keen bird spotter. We bought her a cd for her birthday to help her identify the birds from their songs. because of course, often you canhear them, but you can't see them! She was delighted to hear a wren, such a big-hearted song from a tiny bird!
The flowers are lovely, too. This morning registered -2, though, so I hope there won't be too many casualties!
    Lovely post, as always.

  12. Glad that your swifts have arrived. These are lovely flowers. Our woods is so dense and wet that we don't see flowers like this. I did visit all the bird pages as you know I love bird...Fun to see the similarities in your birds and our birds Juliet...Michelle

  14. It's good that you know what birds you have. I hate to admit that I don't know the difference between the small ones in my own yard.
