Fungi

I walked my usual route along the Water of Leith today. The weather was quite mild though dull and slightly damp. Although all the paths are pasable, some require that you walk in the mud at the side to avoid the remaining ice that is surprisingly thick in some places. In most places though the snow and ice have melted and the fungi certainly seem to like that! They gave a distincult autumnal feel to the area.

There was a heron fishing in the river, a pair of goosanders and several dippers (or lots of sightings of one very energetic bird!). The trees were full of long tailed tits, calling softly and fluttering in the branches.

  1. I'll take mild over freezing, even if it is a little on the "dull" side. :) Like that photo...

  2. I love the colors in this photo - the warmth of the brown and gold in contrast to the cool green and purple-gray.

  3. That touch of orange in the dark environment is such a tonic Juliet. So glad you have changed your header - that water looked so cold it made me shiver - now that lovely sky through those tracery branches is such a tonic.

  4. Lovely shot! thanks for the birder links too. That was fun. Although the goosander one didn't work for me and I am so curious -- that's a bird I've never heard of.

  6. Sallie - the goosander link works now!

Weaver, sorry the water was too cold for you! That's a problem with choosing seasonally relevant photos I guess!

Bunnygirl - the collurs really struck me too!

    Jasmine - nature's treasures indeed!

  8. Yes, super picture. I'm amazed the fungi made it through the last month, but we were out on Sunday fungi spotting and lo, there they were! Must learn more about these incredible forms - everything we find is never in our "Fungi Spotters Book", much to the boys, and my, disappointment. We spend half-an-hour attempting to find any resemblance between what's in front of us and what's in the book.
