Black headed gulls at Moses Gate

These are black headed gulls in winter plumage (they only have black (or rather brown) heads in summer. Click on the photo to see more detail. The photo was taken when my parents and I visited Moses Gate Country Park, just outside Bolton, last weekend. Funnily enough, this was the only area of water that was frozen, the other ponds were all open water.

for Weekend Reflections.

The large version is best. I like the white birds against the dark background. The bird in flight livens the image.

  6. I think gulls are really interesting and yet we tend to group them all together. I once went to a talk about gulls when the speaker identified all the different ones - it was fascinating.

  7. Embiggening the photo made the view so much more intriguing! I love all the reflected gulls and the one in flight too. My Weekend Reflections are at Happily Retired Gal this week.

  9. I love the bird reflections and the frozen pond is pretty too! I live in a warm climate and don't see much ice.

  10. They look like they are standing on water! I couldn't tell it was frozen!

  11. Fascinating to see the slivers of ice in the foreground. I wonder if the birds end up with frozen feet from standing there too long.

Such clear reflections, for one particular bird especially.

    Have a happy holiday.

  14. Great contrast in this shot - the colors and textures. The ice does interesting things to the reflection.

  17. Congrats on the Purple Train story - there is a class of us who are unable to create, or even understand, such a thing! Ah mysteries!

  20. I followed your advise and bigged it, and it was worth it! At first sight they're standing on water, but then I realized the ice was very thin. Have a great weekend!
