String theory and M theory fascinate me to no end. I also highly recommend Brian Greene's other book, The Fabric of the Cosmos -- more nifty stuff about string theory, and also mind-blowing stuff about the nature of time itself. Not a scientist, but I'm definitely an armchair science nerd. :-DThomma Lynhttp://www.thommalyngrindstaff.com/blognoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16542790.post-19363279142930139272010-04-12T22:37:29.066+01:002010-04-12T22:37:29.066+01:00That sounds fascinating....thank you for the recom...That sounds fascinating....thank you for the recommendation!Beth Niquettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12123973998090266918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16542790.post-45462370185196004112010-04-12T21:59:40.012+01:002010-04-12T21:59:40.012+01:00For anyone who wants an excellent, and comprehensi...For anyone who wants an excellent, and comprehensible, introduction to astronomy, I very highly recommend From Here to Infinity by John and Mary Gribbin. I think it deals with ‘simpler’ subject matter, though, namely the solar system itself, rather than anything as abstruse as string theory. Thanks for the recommendation though – I may dig out the Brian Greene book.Howard BMEhttp://www.myspace.com/belvederemountainexpressnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16542790.post-82648532750907467352010-04-12T21:01:17.689+01:002010-04-12T21:01:17.689+01:00Thanks Poet, right up my street! Inspiring poetry and insightful observations, as always.
This book sounds interesting..science was never my strong point, but am currently enjoying Animate Earth by Stephan Harding (passed on to me by Spider) very poetic in parts..not the science I remember from school! We need more books like this.
Thanks for your lovely comments on the blog. My bo...Thank you SO much for the recommendation!!! My boyfriend has a masters from Columbia University in computer science, but while he was there he did all his research in the applied math and applied physics department, and continued his research for years after graduating. He loves astronomy. I consider myself a scientist as I've studied a good deal of biology and chemistry, but I have no background in physics or astronomy. So it makes it difficult for us to have intellectual conversation about something he loves so much. Maybe I can read The Elegant Universe and actually follow it!!Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15468713627933431744noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16542790.post-78893417481141539732010-04-12T15:10:56.082+01:002010-04-12T15:10:56.082+01:00I am interested in the string theory, I'll kee...I am interested in the string theory, I'll keep my eyes open for this one, thanks!d. moll, l.ac.https://www.blogger.com/profile/16007607538375968631noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16542790.post-5102822004447161742010-04-12T13:43:59.791+01:002010-04-12T13:43:59.791+01:00I love the image of you losing the thread in the m...I love the image of you losing the thread in the middle of the string theory!
