I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes—something known only to her and to the mountain. I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters’ paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view.”<br />- Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac, 1949 RGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02017190779860810318noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16542790.post-7564901023119877992014-09-11T02:56:28.342+01:002014-09-11T02:56:28.342+01:00wow, very interesting - brings to mind for me the ...wow, very interesting - brings to mind for me the situation in Australia with regards to our native wild dog the dingo - research clearly shows that the dingo is beneficial because it keeps down the feral animals etc.,Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16542790.post-32561666567768309712014-09-10T21:02:07.883+01:002014-09-10T21:02:07.883+01:00Jim Crumley is such a miserable old git, though. H...Jim Crumley is such a miserable old git, though. He wrote a book about the Pentland Hills in the 1990s, long since out of print, thankfully, in which he railed against the creation of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, and reserved his strongest ire for a couple of mountain bikers who had the audacity to ride along one of the tracks. How dare anyone other than solitary, silent walkers enjoy the hills! And how dare there be a public body to protect and promote them!Pigeonhousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02404347154560412090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16542790.post-60203892132720084442014-09-10T20:36:49.822+01:002014-09-10T20:36:49.822+01:00Hi Nill, I certainly would prefer to see our red s...Hi Nill, I certainly would prefer to see our red squirrels protected properly before we even think of introducing wolves.....Crafty Green Poethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02486633917197181851noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16542790.post-59127192384295330532014-09-10T20:17:17.022+01:002014-09-10T20:17:17.022+01:00Hi Juliet,

In it, a man rides his land and watches cattle. He shot a wolf who was killing the cows. He said it tore him up to do it because he loves all animals. He did, however, use the fur. It was very interesting to see how he had to get the pack horse accustomed to carrying a wolf carcass on its back. It was terrified as it instinctively saw the wolf as a predator.
